History
The Faculty of Education traces its lineage back to an elementary school teacher training facility that was established in 1875. This was followed by the establishment of Kagoshima Normal School, and then, as a result of the education system reforms implemented in 1949, by the Faculty of Education of Kagoshima University. Throughout this period, the schools in question were cultivating a steady stream of first-class teaching talent. Since the Faculty of Education was established, it has produced a cumulative total of more than 17,000 graduates, who have made a very great contribution, in education and in other fields, both in Kagoshima Prefecture and elsewhere. In the 1994 academic year, the Graduate School of Education was established, with enrolment open to both graduates of the Faculty of Education and persons currently working as teachers in elementary schools, junior high schools or senior high schools. In addition, the 2001 academic year saw the adoption of a new evening class system, enabling students to undertake a course of study at the Graduate School of Education while also working, either in a school or elsewhere, thereby further enhancing the institution’s education research and teacher cultivation functions.
In 2017, the Faculty of Education was restructured, with the establishment of two programs: the regular School Teacher Cultivation Program, and the Special Education Teacher Cultivation Program. In addition, a new Teacher Education course was established within the Graduate School of Education.
